This is the homepage of the SportSURF research network.

SportSURF aims to stimulate multidisciplinary research to address the problems associated with the interactions of sport players and sports surfaces. The network brings together a broad range of stakeholders comprising academics, practitioners and sports governing bodies to share ideas and consolidate current knowledge, discuss and formulate research needs, disseminate the outcomes and seek funding for the long-term benefit of this important topic.

Currently the network has over 300 members (see the members page on the left hand menu for details) from around the world from many different disciplines.

The network has, to date, hosted 8 workshops and a two international conferences, in 2007 and 2010. Details including presentations and reports from these events can be found using the menu on the left of this page.


The 8th SportSURF Workshop on 15/06/2011

The 8th SportSURF workshop was held on Wednesday 15th June 2011 at Halifax Conference Venue, University of Sheffield, UK. The focus of the workshop was to 'Bridging the gap between human loading and mechanical test methods'.

April 21/22 2010 STARSS 2

The 2nd SportSURF Conference STARSS was held at Loughborough University, in conjunction with the Sport Technology Institute, Loughborough, UK and supported by SAPCA.

March 2009

The SportSURF workshop calendar has now held the 7th workshop, MAINTAINING PERFORMANCE on Synthetic Sports Pitches.

April 2008

The 5th SportSURF workshop was held on Thursday 24th April 2008 at Loughborough University Sport Technology Institute, Loughborough, UK. The focus of the workshop was to describe and explaining the technology of ‘Sport Surfaces and Interactions’.

The 6th SportSURF workshop was held in conjunction with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM), as part of their annual education programme in April 2008 at Loughborough University The focus of the workshop was to discuss aspects of sports injury and sport surfaces’.

Our Aim:

Sportsurf aims to stimulate an integrated multidisciplinary research response to address the problems associated with the interactions of sport players and the sport surfaces, for community and elite level across the full range of sports. The network will bring together for the first time a broad range of stakeholders, comprising academics, practitioners, and sport governing bodies to share ideas and consolidate current knowledge, discuss and formulate research needs, disseminate the outcomes and seek funding for the long-term benefit of this important topic.
